Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate bar

Trader Joe's The Dark Chocolate Lover's Chocolate Bar

Even as a younger rumblin’ tumblin’ typhoon, I disliked the term “lover’s”, even in the names of food. Prime example: Pizza Hut’s Meat Lover’s Pizza. While I do like pepperoni, sausage, beef, or any other bits of carnation, just saying the name is like telling the truth: I love meat! Mmmmm meat!” Let’s face the facts, there are better ways to express appreciation for meat than ordering a filet mignon wrapped in bacon. Or a turducken. Or, if you have the chance, take a large piece of pepperoni, and then smear some buffalo chicken dip on it.

So, Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Bar. I will not dwell on the name (e pluribusunum at TJ’s) and instead focus on that word: Lover’s. Love? I can’t go there. We’re sorry, dark chocolate.

If the “85% Cacao” label on there isn’t indication enough, this is one seriously dark chocolate bar. It’s kinda like an obscure b-sides/early days album. This chocolate bar is not suitable for everyone, even if you are a fan. It’s one of the darker TJ’s offerings, and unlike many other TJ’s fine choco-creations, it has no other ingredients to break down the flavor. It’s quite sweet, I admit. It’s not bittersweet, but it tastes more like a brownie. I have also eaten baker’s chocolate squares before and expected the same flavor, despite all the fruity and smooth claims on the labels. Nuh uh. They’re smooth and fruity with a hint of bitterness. Can floral be used to describe chocolate? I don’t know but I am tempted. It’s dark and strong. I can’t describe it adequately, but you will see what I mean if you have tried.  This isn’t Hershey’s.

Two for $1.49 (! This is a great pick-up for a small amount of risk. Sandy and I thought we would each plough our own way through our respective pieces. Oh no. It’s chocolate that’s worth nibbling and slowly enjoying like a grown-up. Although my initial impression was not so great, I found that I enjoyed it more with each subsequent bite. For one night, we shared more than one bar. Sandy liked it more than me and gives it a four. It’s a little potent for my taste, but I don’t think it’s the right audience. So I’ll say a three…nah. 3.5.

Bottom line: The Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate Bar has a 7.5 rating out of 10 Golden Spoons
