Wafers?

Seriously?

No. No. No.

Just to be sure, I Googled the term “wafer”. It’s the first result. This is from whatever source Google considers most reliable.

Imagine my surprise when I opened a bag of Trader Joe’s Ruby Cacao Wafers to find that there were no wafers anywhere. None.

I see instead, these little flat brown rose-colored morsels of roundish color that looked more like a nonpointy and ill chocolate chip or baby candy melt.

No cookie. No crispy stuff. There is nothing waferesque about this stuff. These little pebbles would look right at home in an aquarium. I was sold a bag of lies.

These TJ’s ruby chocolate thingermabobs, whatever name you give them, are quite tasty.

My beautiful bride, always the source of cool, new, trendy and cool stuff on Instagram, claims that ruby chocolate is a fad in America, and that there are ruby cacao KitKats in Japan. Or, you can just say that things are with. Actual wafers. I digress. It’s a new concept that I haven’t heard of, so let me tell you.

Wow. Unique. It’s still difficult to find the right words. There’s definitely a healthy chocolate component, and it is definitely darker and more intense. There’s still so much sweetness, not like a chocolate-covered berry, but similar. Although not as strong, it’s still very fruity. I checked the ingredients and found no fruit flavor. It’s what the beans tasted like. If you haven’t tried them yet, I recommend you do.

They are soft, similar to chocolate chips but less chalky than candy melts. The cacao bits seem to melt well – you can pop some in your mouth, but leave them there for a while to make the flavour come alive. Finally, wash everything off. They also melted quickly when I nuked some. If you like, they can be used to dip in all kinds of things.

Sandy wasn’t too impressed. Sandy had two cookies and then chose a cookie as her nighttime treat. To try to get a better idea, I took a few pieces. Interesting Oder Interesting More than delicious For them. They are a bit odd but they work in a positive way. You can try them yourself, kids. We’re not sure what to do. This is why we are settling for middle scores. Period.

Bottom line: Trader Joe’s Ruby Cacao Wafers – 5.5 out of 10 Golden Spoons
