The pumpkin butter was in the middle of the aisle. We looked over at other TJ’s shoppers who were rushing by. As she perused the syrups and jellies, another woman did a double-take. The pumpkin butter seemed to be the most popular item that sparked curiosity. Sonia and me debated over whether we would purchase and review the product. Then, we thought of a question: “What would be good with pumpkin butter?”
There are six ways you can serve the product in the jar. It is recommended to be used as a soup base, in ice cream or as a glaze on poultry. Its uniqueness can be both a blessing as well as a curse. TJ’s Pumpkin butter is versatile enough to make any food taste like pumpkin. You’ll find yourself experimenting with a culinary tool you don’t really know and can’t make any of your favorite foods taste like pumpkin. It’s sort of like the TwitterKitchen-world: There is a lot of potential in there…but ultimately what’s it all about?
Furthermore, if you wanted something like pumpkin ice cream, for example, it would probably be best to just buy Pilgrim Joe’s Pumpkin Ice Cream—a product whose pumpkin-properties have been balanced and blended by professional ice cream folks, rather than creating your own haphazard version using Pumpkin Butter and whatever you’ve got kicking around in your freezer. Others might like to create their own ice cream, so that they can make it their own.
The texture of the product is very similar to apple butter. It contains pureed pumpkin, honey, sugar, and cinnamon. It is very sweet but still contains traditional pumpkin spices. It was delicious on toast. Although it is fine on its own, we found cream cheese to be the best way to enjoy it. We don’t want to waste energy, time or potentially our lives. FoodWe avoided making things like Pumpkin Butter or sour cream soup. I am pretty certain that this stuff will not be used to bast our Thanksgiving turkey.
I find it fascinating. It’s nice to try something new every once in awhile. I can’t think of a niche for this product in my diet. It is not a replacement for apple butters, jams, and jellies. It is a novelty. Three stars.
Sonia feels the exact same way. But because pumpkins remind her of autumn, which is her favorite season, she couldn’t help but love it. She nearly gave it four stars but chose to give it three and a quarter stars.
Final verdict: 6.5 out 10 stars
