Our blog does very well with desserts. They often have an above-average number of pageviews from our readers, but even more often than that, they score above average in our 0-10 points rating system. In fact, the last two additions to the Pantheon have been desserts. Russ, Sandy and Sandy both reviewed the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Bar, and Lemon Ginger Ice Cream as recent sweet treats that are well-deserving our elite-eats title. From the past FivePantheon Foods ThreeI have also enjoyed desserts. And Sonia and I enjoyed the Raspberry Macaroon Cake enough to give it a 9 out of 10.
I believe that all four [email protected] readers have a sweet tooth. I know I have one. I was so pleased to find that half of the items I bought at TJ’s this week were desserts. This surprised my wife who is slightly more concerned about her health.
But anyway, these lemon bars, like the Macaron aux Framboises, come frozen, and they require a thawing time of approximately 45 minutes. Although they are small, they are heavy and rich. I wanted shout “!Lemony Snicket!”
I’m aware that’s the name of an author of children’s books and not something to shout after eating a citrusy dessert, but it certainly seemed appropriate at the time. I began to call the desserts “Lemony Snickets.” “Sonia, would another Lemony Snicket be a good idea?” So on. They are very lemony. They are both extremely sweet and tart. They can vary in texture depending on how long they were allowed to thaw. Consumption is best at 45 minutes. They become too cold and icy after that. If you wait too long, they will become mushy and difficult to eat, especially if it is hot outside.
Each piece had a strange white confection layer on its top. It was almost like a thin layer powdered sugar. It was extremely sweet and dissolved quickly on the tongue. Occasionally, the sheet would frustrate me by sliding off the lemon bar and landing on the floor or my lap, at which point it became nearly impossible to salvage intact.
The bars were balanced with tart lemoniness and sweet sweetness, which I liked. Sonia agreed. She also pointed out that the bottom, cake-like layer, could have been firmer. Although it tasted delicious, it was quite fragile after it had been frozen for over an hour. The custard portion was creamy and delicious. Perfect as I had hoped. These lemon bars will get double the 4’s. These lemon bars are a must for any lemon-lover.
Bottom line: 8/10
