Trader Joe’s Green & Red Hatch Chile Flavour Flakes

Trader Joe's Green & Red Hatch Chile Flakes

Hatch chiles. It’s so hot right now.

Well…not precisely, actually.

See, there’s the new Trader Joe’s Green & Red Hatch Chile Flakes. The peppers of Gods are getting a lot of attention on TJ’s social media, as well as bloggies such ours. It’s not a bad thing.

However, hatch chiles may not be in season at the moment. Their peak season seems to be late fall/early winter AKA pumpkin spice season. And second, hatch chiles don’t seem very hot or spicy.

Hatch chiles are more sweet/smoky/slightly heat-driven. This is something I have never personally experienced, but others have described as truly transcendent. That’s not the way I want it. You want sweet, mild, with a hint of smoke and heat. Yes, it is. It’s a refreshing change from the traditional crushed red pepper flakes. Are you looking for an out-of-body/out of the world experience? Nah. It might be better to save that money for Hatch Harvest festivities, which I believe are at peak season.

Use them like you would any pepper sprinkle: eggs, soups, salads and meats. Oomph – and it’s nice for TJ’s to offer a versatile condiment that help convey at least a fraction of the whole hatch experience. While I may not be in love with these products, I do enjoy them. Delicious flakes.

Bottom line: Trader Joe’s Green & Red Hatch Chile Flakes: 7 out of 10 Golden Spoons
