I can already see you all, log-term readers, rolling your eyes as this is being written. However, I’m going for healthier eating and I truly mean it. Scout’s honor. Cross my heart and pray to (not) death. You’re probably thinking in your head, “Oh! That’s a New Year’s Resolution he’ll abandon any day now. And before we know it Ol’ Chubbo’s back to writing reviews on chocolate potato chips and pumpkin cheesecake in no matter how much time. You would probably be right ….normally. It’s these new habits that both Sandy and I are trying to form that led us to our purchase of Trader Joe’s Crunchy Black & White Rice Rolls. We found them in the checkout lane. It was known for being a hot spot for fine grabs of chocolatey and sweet treats. This time, they were not there.

They’re actually quite good. They are more like puffed rice than rice cakes. This is a difficult distinction to make, but it’s there. Rice cakes are more Styrofoamy than puffed or steamed rice, which I like to associate with rice cakes. These taste and feel like rice cakes but are 100% biodegradable. They aren’t very special, other than that. The claim that black rice was invented is something I am skeptical about because 1) I have never heard of it before and 2) the whole roll is the same ricey white. 3) Black rice is one more consonant away and is something I make a habit out of trying to avoid. It’s a fairly uniform stick, which is crunchy and sweet with a hint of sweetness. I like it plain but some TJ peanut butter would be great on it. Sad panda).

Sandy is enamored of them. “They are crunchy and sweet, but not too bad for your health!” She says. We are informed by our Weght Watcher app that one of these counts as one WW Point. This is a good snack for those on the move. With a 4.5, she’s almost going all out. Me? I wish they had more flavor, or maybe some variety – for example, a wasabi seaweed type. I don’t understand why not. These are too large for me to eat. It doesn’t matter. I love them enough to give them a 3.
