Trader Joe’s Breaded Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Trader Joe's Breaded Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Fried cheese is the best! I’ve always loved mozzarella sticks. It’s amazing that people dip their fried cheese in tomato sauce, often marinara. Tomato is a fruit or vegetable, right? It’s healthy! The fruits and vegetables, dairy and breading are all considered grains. Three of the four major food groups. A simple way to make a balanced meal is to add a sausage or hotdog to your plate.

After most of their cheese had leaked out from the breading, the sticks came out the oven. The result was a hollow tube of crust and a large wad of lightly-charred cheese on top. For some reason, I found them to taste frozen-burnt. They were gone within a week of being purchased. We only opened the bag an hour after eating them. It was still good before the expiration date. So, I don’t know what happened. Sonia didn’t notice the freezer burnt taste, but she doesn’t usually notice it.

We dipped our mozzarella sticks in TJ’s Tomato and Roasted Red Pepper Soup. They went together well. It worked just as well as the actual marinara sauce. It didn’t take long for me to notice the strange taste once the soup was cooked. It was really delicious.

Sonia pointed out that the breading had tapioca in it, and I was shocked. Sonia pointed out that the bread was still made from wheat flour (sorry gluten-free peeps), and was very similar in texture to traditional mozzarella stick breading. However, I wonder if the subtle flavor of freezer-burn was somehow related to the tapioca . Tapioca does not taste like freezer-burn. But maybe my taste buds sensed something odd and reverted to the “this just slightly funny” message. My brain then interpreted this as freezer-burn …?. That last sentence may be a good example of my foodie-hack blog and not a neuroscientist .

I have not been blown away, or even majorly disappointed, by any mozzarella stick. Fried cheese is what it’s all about. Tapioca starch was an interesting touch, but next time Trader Joe we expect you will blow us away. Put marinara sauce in the tube of cheese. Add shrimp or other seafood. Then, stuff cocktail weenies into each stick. Entertain us! You are a master at weird things. We’ll be forever grateful for your culinary creativity and will continue to write this blog.

These are the 4 stars that Sonia has given. They are my 3rd stars.

Final verdict: 7/10
