Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers stated Friday that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be playing for them. PlayableWith a thumb injury on the throwing hand, there is uncertainty over a game that must be won by a club looking to secure the last spot in the NFC playoffs. The 49ers (9-7) will visit the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday. They can win a tie or win, or lose to the Atlanta Falcons.
Shanahan declined the offer to name a starter but stated that both Garoppolo, and rookie Trey Lance, have performed well in practice.
“I know exactly what we are doing, but I don’t feel like sharing it right now.” Shanahan said.
Garoppolo was limited this week after injuring the thumb in Week 16’s loss to Tennessee Titans. After the season, he is expected to undergo surgery. Lance received his second career start on Sunday in Garoppolo’s place and performed admirably in the second half, leading to a 23-7 victory over the Houston Texans.
Garoppolo has completed 278 passes of 409 for 3,494 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Shanahan has maintained since the preseason that Garoppolo remains the 49ers’ best option for quarterback, despite the fact that the 49ers invested the No. Lance, the third overall draft pick.
Trent Williams, 49ers left tackle, is also questionable. He is one of the best offensive linemen in the league. Williams sustained an elbow injury, and was unable to practice. Williams’ absence could be a major concern for the 49ers’ offensive effectiveness, considering the Rams have many talented pass rushers.
